The Dorothy A. Swope Education Fund

Introduction

In addition to supporting individual scholars, we believe in fostering a broader culture of academic enthusiasm. Honoring Dorothy A. Swope’s legacy as an education programs innovator, our foundation champions the idea that true education begins with a spark of interest.

Through the Dorothy A. Swope Education Fund, we support organizations and programs committed to providing educational opportunities that ignite curiosity and cultivate a passion for learning. This initiative is a core part of our mission to invest in the lives of learners and support life-long learning experiences.

The Projects

Our foundation selects projects for investment through a process deeply rooted in the mission, vision, and core values embodied by Dorothy A. Swope’s life and work in education. This ensures that every initiative we support not only honors her legacy but also creates a meaningful and widespread impact.

Alignment with Our Mission and Values

The selection process is guided by our primary mission:

  • to invest in the lives of learners and further the life-changing potential of education. We seek out organizations and programs that are fundamentally committed to providing educational opportunities that
  • ignite curiosity and cultivate a passion for learning. This aligns directly with Dorothy’s work as an education programs innovator and her belief in the potential of all students, especially those from diverse and challenged backgrounds.

Projects are evaluated based on their ability to:

  • Foster Lifelong Learning: We prioritize initiatives that support continuous learning experiences, reflecting Dorothy’s advocacy for lifelong education.
  • Empower Diverse Learners: A key consideration is whether a project recognizes and nurtures the potential of a wide range of students, honoring Dorothy’s gift for seeing the promise in every child she taught.
  • Innovate in Education: We look for creative and effective approaches to education that reflect Dorothy’s role as an innovator in the field.

Impact

Broader Impact on the Community

The projects we invest in are chosen for their potential to create a ripple effect that extends far beyond their immediate participants.

  • Local Impact: By supporting local organizations, we strengthen the educational fabric of communities. These programs provide enriching opportunities that might not otherwise be available, creating a more vibrant and supportive learning environment for children and families. This investment helps to cultivate a local culture that values curiosity and academic passion from an early age.

  • National Impact: The success of the programs we support can serve as a model for other educational initiatives across the country. By championing innovative teaching methods and programs that successfully ignite a passion for learning, we contribute to a national conversation about effective education. Best practices and successful outcomes can be shared, inspiring other organizations and educators to adopt similar approaches.

  • International Impact: In an increasingly connected world, the principles of fostering curiosity and a love for learning are universal. The innovative educational models we support have the potential to be adapted and implemented internationally. By investing in programs with scalable ideas, we aim to contribute to the global advancement of education, ensuring that Dorothy A. Swope’s legacy of empowering learners has a lasting and worldwide impact.

Preserving the Past. Share Your Legacy. – A Recap of the Dorothy A. Swope Education Fund’s Featured Project

The Dorothy A. Swope Education Fund is proud to present a recap of our featured project, “Preserving the Past. Share Your Legacy.” This initiative was made possible through the inaugural Cook County Digital Equity Grant (2025-2026), a landmark program co-designed by the Cook County Office of the President and City Bureau to bridge the digital divide through the power of community storytelling.

As we enter the celebration phase of this project, we extend our sincere gratitude to the Cook County Office of the President and City Bureau. This grant, provided the essential resources to center the voices of our seniors and ensure their lived experiences are honored in our digital landscape.

A Partnership Rooted in Connection

The success of this project was driven by a collaborative mission. The Dorothy A. Swope Foundation partnered with My-Indaba and Learning Dimensions to create a unique space where history and modern technology meet. By focusing on “Cornerstone 2: Confidence,” we sought to build digital equity by making advanced technology relatable and accessible through personal narratives.

Designing the Future Through Lived History

The heart of this project was the stories shared by our participants, enabling seniors aged 65 and older to be co-designers of their own digital legacies. By sharing their memories, challenges, and triumphs, they provided the essential foundation for the creation of innovative AI-driven content.

This collaborative process included:

  • AI-Generated Videos: Seniors provided the narratives and personal insights that informed the design of custom AI videos, ensuring their likeness and voice were represented with dignity and accuracy.
  • Digital Avatars: Participants’ stories shaped the creation of personal representations to navigate digital spaces.
  • Storytelling as Advocacy: By sharing their journeys, participants acted as digital ambassadors, demonstrating that digital inclusion is about more than access—it is about representation and the preservation of history.

The culmination of these shared stories is a vibrant digital archive that bridges the gap between generations. We invite you to experience these narratives and celebrate the wisdom of our community members by visiting the project gallery.

Announcing Cohort 2: Expanding the Impact of “Preserving the Past. Share Your Legacy.”

Following the incredible success of our inaugural year, the Dorothy A. Swope Foundation-Education Fund, in partnership with My-Indaba and Learning Dimensions, is thrilled to announce that funding has been secured to launch a second cohort for our featured initiative, “Preserving the Past. Share Your Legacy.” Meet the second Digital Equity IMPACT cohort!

Originally launched through the landmark Cook County Digital Equity Grant (2025–2026)—a program co-designed by the Cook County Office of the President and City Bureau—this project empowers community seniors aged 65 and older to become co-designers of their own digital legacies. Through custom AI-generated videos, personal digital avatars, and narrative advocacy, our first cohort beautifully demonstrated that digital equity is about far more than just access—it is about representation, confidence, and honoring lived history.

With this additional support, we are excited to deepen our collaboration with City Bureau and the Cook County Office of the President, allowing us to bring this impactful program to even more community members and continue bridging the intergenerational digital divide.
